places I love
Wherever I travel on this amazing planet we call home, I am inspired by the people, colours, sounds and fragrances I encounter. Different skies, constellations, atmospheres. I take numerous reference photos. My eyes are my viewfinder, constantly creating compositions in my mind’s eye. And then the joy of putting paint on canvas to create a lasting memory.
'Gateway at Korean Folk Village' A stunning gateway to a charming venue. If you are a fan of Korean historical dramas, this authentic village will attract you like a magnet! Beyond the gateway, lines of colourful gossamer fabrics were wafting in the calm breeze. This was challenge to capture, with its uneven lines, ancient wood and beautifully crafted tiles. So atmospheric! 40 cm x 50 cm
'Winter Sun at Korean Folk Village' Capturing a shaft of winter sunlight just catching the top of an old stone wall. The sky is a remarkable silvery blue, the sun shines like a diamond. 50 cm x 40 cm
'The First Snow in Gloucestershire' Driving home from a restful winter weekend, I was struck by the beauty of the winter sky, a gradient of soft colours from the horizon. Summer is flamboyant, but winter has more subtle glories. 40 cm x 30 cm
'New York Vibes' The city air that creates stunningly fiery sunsets reflecting off skyscrapers of geometrical ingenuity. A simple sailboat on the Hudson River, heading home. 50 cm x 60 cm
'Rainy Night in Bath Somerset' A city filled with magnificent architecture. And yet, my eye was caught, on a rainy winter evening, by this tiny hidden walkway between North Parade and Abbey Green. 15 cm x 30 cm
'Fujisan from Ashinoko' One of my favourite places on earth in one of my favourite countries. This is one of my biggest paintings, at 4 ft by 2 ft. It had to be, to do it justice. This was the coldest of winter's days, the air catching in my throat. The Torii gate's fiery hue just enhanced the beauty of Fujisan, sparkling in all their winter glory. The sky was impossibly cerulean. Fujisan reminds us that we can take nothing for granted. They are a volcano, and beneath their captivating exterior rumbles the core of the planet we call home. Beauty may be fleeting, but whether it lasts for a hundred years or a millennium, as long as there are artists to share it, it will always be remembered and celebrated. 120 cm x 60 cm
'After the Snowstorm at The Pond Central Park NYC' In February 2026 I was visiting family in NYC and experienced the wonder of the intense blizzard that engulfed much of the north-east of the USA. Americans are used to such vagaries of the weather, but this particular one certainly impressed even seasoned residents with its vigour! Venturing out in the afternoon of the following day, I was impressed at the way New Yorkers pulled together and doggedly cleared sidewalks and got on with life. This view of The Pond in Central Park from 5th Av/59th St caught my eye. 60 cm x 30 cm
'The Griffin Inn Bath Somerset' The best Inn in the best city in England. The contrast of the warm Bath stone against the intense cerulean summer sky is beautiful to behold. As a synesthete, I associate these colours with joy and safety. And the name 'Griffin' perfectly matches the green colour of the paintwork in my mind association! Do you associate words, numbers and emotions with colours? 10 in x 14 in
'The Flute Bath Somerset' This delightful restaurant offered a menu of amazing seafood cuisine. It was fabulous, but has now morphed into another identity, so this is a great example of the value of capturing things in a moment in time. 28 cm x 36 cm
'The Wheatsheaf Inn Northleach Gloucestershire' A favourite haunt in this charming Cotswold village. Caught after the first snow on a crisp winter's day, a warm welcome awaited inside. 36 cm x 25 cm
